More about Barbara

Barbara Hummel has six decades of experience as a competitive swimmer and 20+ years of experience as a swim teacher and coach. She set her first national age-group record at age nine, became one of the youngest swimmers ever to compete at Olympic Trials, and has continued to set national records (and a world relay record) throughout her life as a masters swimmer.

In 1998, Barbara turned her first career as a book editor into a second career as a swim coach and writer/editor for the sport she loves. From 1998 to 2001, she was assistant masters coach for the YWCA of New York City. Also during this time she worked at Total Immersion as editor and as a senior instructor, coaching at dozens of swim clinics and summer camps, and directing several week-long triathlon training camps.

In 2002, Barbara teamed with Olympian Glenn Mills to found GoSwim.tv, now the world’s leading content provider to the sport of swimming. GoSwim creates instructional videos featuring Olympians from the USA and around the globe. Barbara’s role is to interview the athletes and write the voiceover scripts that describe the things they do, that every swimmer can learn to do. Barbara has written and/or edited dozens of articles for the GoSwim website and for Swimming World Magazine and Swimmer, the magazine for masters swimmers.

In 2003, Barbara started the UVRays masters swim team at the CCBA in Lebanon, NH. In 2009, the team migrated with Barbara to the newly opened Upper Valley Aquatic Center. Barbara’s goal is to help every swimmer achieve their goal, whether it’s putting their face in the water for the first time, completing their best triathlon, having fun while staying fit, or achieving a world record.

The UVRays is a diverse, welcoming team where swimming is the catalyst for finding friends, staying fit, and achieving lifetime goals.
